About The Fiji Project
The EWB Cal Poly Fiji team is working with three communities, Nakawaga, Ligaulevu and Vesi, on the northern island of Mali, Fiji. We are working to improve their current water supply systems by increasing their rain catchment capacity by about 200,000 L, installing a solar pump system at existing boreholes and designing user friendly portable sand filters that villagers can construct in country. The Fiji team has finished three remote implementations totaling 90,000 L worth of rain water storage. We will also be prototyping our solar powered borehole pump system and portable slow sand filters which will be built in our next implementation trip.
Fiji Project Timeline
2017
Fiji Team Founded
The Fiji partnership was founded March of 2017.
2019
Remote Implementation
The teams first remote implementation occurred during summer 2019. The community built two rainwater catchment tanks in each of the 3 villages on Mali island. The team sent a rain catchment system design manual to the community along with the necessary materials.
2022
Implementation in Mali
First in-country implementation planned for summer 2022.
2018
First Assessment Trip: Coastal Erosion
The first assessment trip to Mali island happened spring 2018 to collect data on coastal erosion. We determined that a coastal erosion project is out of our team's scope. We then reassessed what their most pressing issue was in country.
Second Assessment Trip: Drinkable Water
The second assessment trip occurred during summer 2018 and determined that access to drinkable water throughout the year was the most pertinent issue that needed to be addressed.
2020-2021
More Remote Implementation
The team did more remote implementation and testing due to COVID-19.
